Stepping into 2015

I've never been more hapless, frustrated and in such great pain than during the hours leading up to the delivery of baby Titus.

Yet, looking back, those were the most fulfilling hours of 2014 - and so far in my life - and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a mummy to such a precious little boy.

With Titus and the good husband by my side, I know 2015 will be an even greater year.

Happy New Year y'all!

Titus gave mummy a surprise at bath time

This morning's bathing routine did not go quite well.

Baby Titus woke up a little agitated and things went downhill once I started to clean his face. The poor chap cried so hard that he had a hard time breathing, and I had to keep pausing to hug him close to my face in hopes of calming him.

And half-way through his hair wash, he unleashed pee on me. :(

Tomorrow I shall strip myself down when I bathe him. There's no point wearing clothes since I'd get wet with bath water and possible pee and poop.

In fact, I should just be butt-naked at home all day since my clothes often end up with spit-ups and my own milk stains.

Big(ger) boy!

At day 25, baby darling weighs 3.9kg, having gained 800g since his birth. That means he has been feeding well!

Little Bean is growing

All the pain I've been suffering from cracked, bleeding nipples is worth it!

Unconfined confinement

Asian women, especially the Chinese, believe in being confined to the house for an entire month right after delivering their babies.

During this confinement period, the new mothers would eat specific food to rebuild their energy and rid the body of 'cold' and other 'toxins' acquired during the pregnancy. Practices include eating copious amounts of ginger and vinegar, drinking plenty of herbal soups and red date tea in place of other beverages including plain water, avoiding the fan and air-conditioning (crazy thing to do in tropical Singapore!), and staying away from water (which means no baths and showers!).

To help new mothers get through this tough period, professional confinement ladies are often hired to cook and care for the new mother and her newborn.

In my point of view, many of these confinement rules were set during the ancient times in China, where there are four seasons (and therefore the biting cold of winter), a lack of electric heaters, food poisoning was common, and healthcare standards were poor.

It might have been dangerous for a new mother, weak from recent childbirth, to drink water from the well back in ancient times, but today, water straight from the tap in Singapore is absolutely safe to consume. To me, there is no scientific proof that drinking plain water in the first month of motherhood will cause the belly to bloat, or that showering and washing one's hair will give the mother rheumatism and make her susceptible to cold.

Despite not believing in these old wives' tales, I've gone ahead and hired a confinement lady to help me through the first month. Why? Because the confinement lady is an expert in caring for newborns and I could use an extra pair of hands to guide me, the greenhorn mummy.

At the point of writing this, my confinement lady has already been with me for 22 days. The going has been good, as I had laid the ground rules on day one.

I will shower and wash my hair daily, and without the use of herbs in my bath water (be warned, they leave a yellow stain on tiles), I told her.

I will not wear long sleeves and long pants at home at all, not in this heat, I told her.

I will have the fan and air-conditioning on should the weather be too humid, I told her.

I will not have fatty pig trotters in vinegar or anything cooked with Yomeishu wine at all, I told her.

I've heard of terribly strict confinement ladies who make life a living hell for new mothers. Thankfully, mine's accommodating.

And boy is she patient and hardworking! Because of her, I've been able to get sufficient sleep the past 22 days. Although I wake up several times in the wee hours of the morning to feed baby Titus, my confinement lady would take over burping him and patting him to sleep. There has been several times when Titus fussed endlessly through the wee hours, and she'd stayed up to calm him.

She also does more than care for me and baby. She'd mop the floor, scrub down the bathrooms, and do the family's laundry.

When some relatives popped over for dinner on Christmas Day, she even stayed up until they left to mop the floor and clean all the dishes.

I couldn't have asked for a better confinement lady.

Yet, my mother-in-law has managed to find fault with her! She's not hired to watch TV, my disgruntled mother-in-law griped. The kitchen sink still is greasy, and the fridge needs cleaning, mother-in-law pointed out. She shouldn't be allowed to eat with me at the same table, and how dare she ate the meats that were meant for me, mother-in-law grunted.

I reminded mother-in-law that the confinement lady is not a domestic servant; she's a professional whose job is to take care of me and the baby. She is also human and needs some entertainment and rest. And what's wrong with dining with me? She is my equal, not my slave.

My mother-in-law's regard for helpers, unfortunately, is set in ancient times. I have to be really careful not to let both ladies meet face-to-face in the house, lest a cat fight ensue.

Our first festive celebration

Although I've been taking a million shots of baby Titus since he was born, there are barely any photos of the both of us. That is hardly surprising considering how disheveled I am most of the time.

So, since family is coming over for a simple dinner party for Christmas today and I'm all dressed up (which really just means I've combed my hair, drawn my eyebrows and slicked on lipstick, and donned clean clothes), I've taken the opportunity to take a few photos with baby and the Awesome Husband.

Merry Christmas y'all!

Plenty of patience is needed when it comes to photographing babies. It took several shots before we landed this gorgeous photo. Baby Titus may not be looking at the camera, but his expression is lovely and his eyes are wide open.

For more than 10 years our photographs were of just the two of us, and now with darling Titus, things have changed. For the better. And I am looking forward to even more photos of us three.

What do babies dream of?

Of milky waterfalls and boobies, I bet!

Ooh, life is gooood!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Oh yes, it is! And this year's Christmas will be even more wonderful because of you, darling Titus!

Mummy and daddy love you dearly!

My two darlings

I'm thankful that the Awesome Husband is a hands-on daddy, and would always help to burp and care for baby Titus whenever he's home.

Daddy and son moments

This is a particularly adorable shot of them both, with baby Titus looking soooo sleepy. I just love the way he looks when he yawns. His large eyes are always reduced to slits and his tiny lips part to reveal such a gaping mouth!

Sweetest little thing

Tell me. Tell me how to resist devouring this tiny bubs. He looks especially sweet when he's asleep.

And whenever he dozes off in my arms, I'd plant butterfly kisses along his beautiful jawline and on his tiny chinny chin chin.

Mummy loves you dearly, Titus.

All things choc and yummy

It's funny how I had zero cravings when I was preggers, but am now requiring daily doses of chocolate anything.

The Awesome Husband has helped to stock the snack cupboard full with packets of Kit Kat, and today he presented me with a dozen splendid chocolate cupcakes from Twelve Cupcakes. I'm hooked on them.

Dang. All those weight I had lost during my pregnancy, a result of poorly appetite and nausea that lasted five months, may all return with my current cravings.

Work it like a supermodel

At week 31 of my pregnancy the Awesome Husband and I went for a professional photo shoot at Sage Clover Photography to capture memories of that glorious stage of our lives.

Kymberley the photographer was a delight to work with, and her creations were splendid. ♥

Walking hand in hand down the path of parenthood
Sunflower in my hands; sunshine in my belly

So pleased with Kymberley were we that we needed little prodding to engage her for baby Titus's first photo shoot. On Day 10 of his existence, we whisked him off to the studio where he was put in the cutest of poses and outfits for four hours.

It probably wasn't easy for Kymberley, as our little darling refused to sleep right after his feed which made it a tad tricky to pose him and have him retain those positions. Plus, he peed several times on himself and Kymberley.

My heart pinched each time he wailed, and I felt like the world's worst mummy for putting him through the photo session to satiate my own vanity.

Oh but when the shoot was over baby Titus returned to my arms all calm and sleepy, and I am certain he still loves me.

Here's a sneak peek of what's to come, as Kymberley is still processing the rest of the images.

Hello! I'm Titus.

What an angelic pose, eh?

Like all babies, little Titus looks so sweet when he's asleep. In fact, he is sleeping now so I shall end this post here and go sit by his cot to see what he's dreaming of.

Spidey

Baby Titus is all colour coordinated today. :)

I'm not particularly in favour of kids attire with cartoon characters. So commercial and hardly sweet. But somehow this Spiderman bodysuit seems pretty alright.

I also love how his siren red mittens look like boxing gloves. Hehe.

It is a pity that he's all dressed up with nowhere to go!

Signature O

Baby Titus has a signature look that truly melts my heart. For some reason known only to him, he would tighten his lips into an 'o' as he studies my face.

Oooo, momma, do as I command

Oooo, momma, here I go again

A friend said her daughter used to make a similar face whenever she pooped. Oh boy, how nice it must be to know when exactly a soiled diaper is coming so it can be changed right away!

Unfortunately, baby Titus's signature O face does not herald the arrival of a bag of poop. Never mind that I don't know the reason behind this look. I'm happy to just enjoy it and then plant numerous kisses upon those taut lips.

Who's delish?

This morning baby darling is looking like a yummy burrito!

Wrapped up nice and tight

So please excuse me now while I go devour him! :)

All baby wants is a milk buffet

It was a trying night, with baby Titus demanding hourly feeds from 10pm to almost 3am this morning.

My nipples are sore and the right one is bleeding because I just could not get him to latch on properly. Well, it isn't his fault; my right nipple is short. :(

Anyway, all that is over and I managed to catch up on sleep, thanks to good help from my confinement lady.

And then this morning I woke up to this face, and the nightmare was forgotten.

Too cute

Fuss all you want, darling. Mummy can't get mad at a face like this.

Melting Granny Yue's heart

Baby Titus was supposed to be due on Dec 9, the very day my mom was born more than 60 years ago. That sure got my mom very excited.

But nobody can be absolutely sure when baby would actually arrive, and little sunshine decided he wanted to see the world ahead of plans.

While my mom did not to share her birthday with her first grandchild, she did get to celebrate that day with him. ♥

Proud grandparents

Happiest birthday, I bet!

Seeing the joy in mom's eyes made me wish I had tried for a baby sooner and had not kept putting motherhood off because of my other pursuits. Being preggers and the addition of Titus to our lives have brought such immense joy to both the Awesome Husband and me too, and we had grown even closer.

Everyone says parenthood changes your life. Yeah, for the better!

First things first

Hello there!

If you are looking for an inspiring blog written by a knowledgeable mummy to guide you in your next stage of life, well, you've found the wrong blog.

I'm just as clueless as you are.

Now that we've got this clear, please allow me to do what all parents love doing: showing off their offsprings.

Please meet baby Titus. ♥

The shot below was taken soon after I regained my strength - I was woozy from all assortment of pain killers administered in the hours leading up to Titus's delivery. The Awesome Husband looked absolutely fresh despite having stayed up with me throughout my 30-plus-hour ordeal.

Who's the proud daddy?

And this one was taken in the wee hours of Dec 4, right after his feed. At just a day old, baby Titus was incredibly tiny in my arms. Although he weighed a good 3.1kg at birth, he was a long and thin baby, hardly like the Marshmallow Man-lookalikes in the hospital nursery.

Spaced out after a morning feed
Little darling has my long fingers!

Alright, gotta go now. Today's our first day back at home and there's much to be done. Like taking a million more photos of him. :)
